Azerbaijan 3-Day Itinerary

Baku only — the essential highlights for a short break or layover

Overview

Three days is enough to see Baku properly without rushing — the UNESCO Old City, the modern architectural landmarks, and one day trip beyond the city. This itinerary suits business travelers extending a trip, cruise passengers with limited time, or anyone treating Azerbaijan as a short stopover rather than a full holiday.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Baku Old City
Start in Icherisheher, Baku’s UNESCO-listed walled Old City. Climb the Maiden Tower for panoramic views, then explore the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Wander the cobbled lanes at your own pace — this is a place that rewards unhurried exploration. In the afternoon, walk the Caspian Boulevard and finish with dinner in the Old City, where restaurants sit inside centuries-old stone buildings.
Day 2 — Modern Baku & Absheron day trip
Morning: visit the Heydar Aliyev Center, Zaha Hadid’s flowing white landmark, followed by the Flame Towers viewing point and Highland Park for the best panoramic photo of the city. Afternoon: a half-day trip to the Absheron Peninsula — Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag’s continuously burning hillside, both within 30–40 minutes of central Baku.
Day 3 — Gobustan & departure
A half-day trip to Gobustan National Park — UNESCO-listed rock art dating back 40,000 years, plus the surreal mud volcano field nearby. Return to Baku by early afternoon for a final walk, last-minute shopping in the Old City bazaar, or a relaxed lunch before your departure flight.
Planning tips

Baku’s compact layout means most sights are a short taxi ride apart — a private guide with a vehicle is the most efficient way to cover this itinerary without wasted time. If your flight allows, an early morning or late evening slot on Day 3 gives extra flexibility.
