About Ateshgah Fire Temple

Ateshgah is a caravanserai-style pilgrimage site built around a natural gas vent that produced an eternal flame — sacred to Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs across the ancient world. Pilgrims from Persia, India, and Central Asia made arduous journeys here to worship at what they believed was a divine manifestation of the sacred fire. The complex includes the central altar flame, courtyard cells where ascetics lived in voluntary self-mortification, and inscriptions in Sanskrit, Persian, and Punjabi. The museum provides excellent context.

FAQs
How do I get to Ateshgah Fire Temple?
We include transport to all attractions in our tours. If visiting independently, Bolt or Uber from Baku city centre is the easiest option.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes — Ateshgah Fire Temple is suitable for families. Children typically find it fascinating. Ask your guide to tailor the explanation to younger visitors.
Can I take photographs?
Photography is generally permitted. At certain indoor sites, flash photography may be restricted. Always check with staff before photographing.
Is Ateshgah's flame natural or artificial today?
The flame visitors see today is artificially maintained, since industrial gas extraction in the surrounding area altered the natural gas flow that once fed the temple continuously.
Is Ateshgah connected to modern Zoroastrianism in Azerbaijan?
Azerbaijan's Zoroastrian community is now essentially historical rather than a living practicing population, so Ateshgah functions primarily as a museum and historical site today.
