Gobustan region · 70 km from Baku
Azerbaijan has over 400 mud volcanoes — a third of all the mud volcanoes in the world — making it the mud volcano capital of the planet. Unlike hot volcanic activity, Azerbaijan's mud volcanoes are cold, driven by deep natural gas pressure that pushes grey mud to the surface in continuous, hypnotic bubbles. The main field near Gobustan is the most accessible and dramatic, with dozens of volcanoes ranging from small bubbling puddles to crater-sized formations. Walking among them is safe, surreal, and utterly unforgettable.
