The genuinely ambiguous geography that shapes Azerbaijan's culture, sport, and international identity
Azerbaijan sits in the South Caucasus, a region conventionally considered transcontinental — geographers differ on the exact Europe-Asia boundary here, with some drawing the line along the Caucasus mountain range (placing Azerbaijan in Asia) and others including the whole Caucasus isthmus in Europe.
Azerbaijan competes in European sporting competitions (UEFA, Eurovision) and has pursued closer ties with European institutions, while also being a member of Asian organisations and holding deep cultural, linguistic, and religious ties to Turkic and Persian Asian traditions. In practice, Azerbaijan is genuinely both — a transcontinental identity rather than a simple either/or.
Don't expect Azerbaijan to feel purely 'European' or purely 'Asian' — the blend is the point. Baku's architecture mixes European Belle Époque mansions with Islamic-era Old City walls and hyper-modern towers; the cuisine draws on Persian, Turkic, and Russian influences simultaneously.
