From Old City souvenir shops to modern malls — where and what to buy in Baku
Icherisheher's narrow lanes are dense with shops selling carpets, ceramics, and craft items — genuine Azerbaijani carpets (Baku, Ganja, Shirvan, Quba, and Karabakh patterns are all distinct and identifiable) make the most meaningful souvenir, though prices and quality vary significantly, so buying from a reputable dealer or with a knowledgeable guide is worthwhile.
Baku has several large modern shopping centres with international and local retail brands, useful for practical shopping needs or simply experiencing contemporary Baku consumer culture alongside the historic sightseeing.
A genuine working market for fresh produce, spices, and local food products — an excellent stop for pomegranates in season, local honey, and dried fruit and nuts, alongside a real slice of everyday Baku life beyond the tourist core.
Hand-woven carpets (Sheki, Quba, or Baku patterns), kelagayi silk headscarves (a UNESCO-recognised craft tradition centred in Sheki and Basqal), Lahij copperware, saffron, and pomegranate products all make distinctive, genuinely local souvenirs rather than generic tourist-shop items.
