Wildflowers, mild temperatures, and Novruz — why spring is many travelers' favourite season here
Baku warms gradually from a mild 10-12°C in March to a comfortable 20-24°C by May, with generally low rainfall. The Caucasus foothills around Sheki and Gabala stay noticeably cooler and greener, often a few degrees behind Baku's warming trend.
Late March brings Novruz, Azerbaijan's most significant cultural celebration, marking the spring equinox with citywide bonfires and public festivity — see our dedicated Novruz guide for full detail. This is the single best reason to specifically target a spring visit.
April and May bring the Caucasus foothills to their most vivid green, with wildflowers covering highland meadows around Gabala, Shahdag, and the approach to Khinalug — particularly rewarding for photography and hiking-focused itineraries.
Our Classic 7-day tour and Northern Highlands 10-day tour both run at full capacity in spring, when comfortable temperatures suit both Baku sightseeing and the more active highland stops. Photography tours also favour this window for the combination of clear light and green landscapes.
Light layers work well — mild days can still bring cool evenings, particularly in the highlands. A light rain jacket is sensible, though spring rainfall is generally modest.
