Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan — Month-by-Month Guide

When to go, what to expect, and which tours run best in each season

Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan

Spring (April–June)

The sweet spot for most travelers. Baku is warm (18–26°C) without summer heat, the Caucasus foothills are green, wildflowers cover the highland meadows, and outdoor activities — hiking, horse riding, photography — are at their best. Our Classic 7-day tour, Northern Highlands, and Photography tours run at full capacity April–June.

Summer (July–August)

Hot in Baku (30–40°C) but cooler in the mountains. The Gabala International Music Festival runs in mid-to-late July — a strong reason to visit this window. Summer tours shift emphasis toward Gabala and Shahdag highlands. Caspian beaches near Baku are popular with local families July–August.

Autumn (September–October)

Arguably the best season. Slightly cooler than spring, autumn colours in the Caucasus foothills, pomegranate harvest in Quba (October), and the tourist crowd thins out noticeably. Sheki's caravanserai and Lahij copper village are least busy in October. Strongly recommended for photography tours.

Winter (December–March)

Ski season at Shahdag (16 pistes) and Tufandag. Baku is mild (5–12°C) with the Old City at its quietest and cheapest. Novruz (late March) is the year's most spectacular cultural event — street bonfires, public celebration, and a citywide festive atmosphere.

Frequently asked questions
When is the cheapest time to visit Azerbaijan?
December–February is the cheapest window for Baku hotels, with prices 20–40% lower than peak season. The trade-off is occasional rain and cooler temperatures (5–10°C), though the Old City is genuinely atmospheric in winter.
Is July too hot for Azerbaijan?
In Baku, yes — 35–40°C makes city sightseeing uncomfortable midday in July. Our summer itineraries schedule Old City visits for early morning and evening, and shift the main days to cooler Gabala and Shahdag highlands.
When is Novruz?
Novruz marks the spring equinox, typically March 20–21. Street celebrations, bonfires, and public events peak in the week before and on the day itself. It's the highest-demand tourism window of the year — book early.
What months are best for hiking in Azerbaijan?
May–June for spring wildflowers and highland green; September–October for autumn colour and clear skies. The highland routes (Khinalug, Caucasus foothills) are best avoided in July–August heat and January–February snow.
