Temperature, rainfall, and packing advice for every month of the year

Azerbaijan Weather by Month

Baku climate

Semi-arid Caspian coast. Summers hot and dry (30–40°C July–August), winters mild and occasionally rainy (5–12°C December–February). Spring and autumn are ideal — 18–26°C, low rainfall, comfortable for walking.

Sheki & Gabala climate

Caucasus foothills — noticeably cooler than Baku. Summer highs 25–32°C, winters with real snow at altitude. Spring and autumn are lush and green with higher rainfall than Baku. Pack layers for evenings year-round.

Khinalug & highland climate

At 2,350m, Khinalug has real alpine conditions. Summer (June–September) is the only reliable window for the mountain road — temperatures 10–20°C. October–May can see snowfall that makes the route impassable.

Lankaran & south climate

Subtropical — warm and humid year-round. The Hirkan forest is lush in all seasons. Summer highs 30–35°C; winters mild (8–15°C). Highest rainfall in Azerbaijan, particularly November–March.

Frequently asked questions
Does it rain a lot in Baku?
Baku averages only 200–250mm of rain per year — one of the driest capitals in Europe/Caucasus. Summer is almost entirely rain-free. October–March sees occasional light rain, but rarely prolonged enough to disrupt sightseeing.
What temperature is Baku in December?
Typically 5–10°C in December, occasionally dropping to 1–3°C at night. Rarely freezes. Pack a warm jacket and layers — the Caspian wind can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
Is Azerbaijan hot in summer?
Baku is very hot in July–August (35–40°C). The northern highlands (Gabala, Shahdag) are 10–15°C cooler and much more comfortable for summer travel. We specifically build summer itineraries around this temperature gradient.
What should I pack for Azerbaijan?
Spring/autumn: light layers, walking shoes, a light rain jacket. Summer: sun protection, light fabrics, plus a jacket for mountain legs. Winter: proper cold-weather gear for ski resorts; mild city jacket for Baku. Modest dress for mosques and religious sites.
