Baku, Gobustan, and a first taste of the northern highlands

Overview

Five days lets you properly cover Baku and add one overnight beyond the capital — typically Sheki, reached via the copper-craft village of Lahij. This is a good length for travelers who want real depth without committing to a full week, and it's a common choice for a first Azerbaijan visit combined with a stop in a neighbouring country.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — Baku Old City

Icherisheher, the Maiden Tower, and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs in the morning; Caspian Boulevard and an Old City dinner in the evening.

Day 2 — Modern Baku & Absheron

Heydar Aliyev Center, Flame Towers, Highland Park, then Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag on the Absheron Peninsula.

Day 3 — Gobustan & drive to Lahij/Sheki

Morning at Gobustan National Park for the rock art and mud volcanoes, then a scenic drive north through Ismayilli's wine country toward Lahij, the medieval copper-craft village. Continue on to Sheki by evening.

Day 4 — Sheki

A full day in Sheki: the Khan's Palace with its extraordinary shebeke stained-glass windows, the restored 18th-century caravanserai, and the old bazaar quarter where craftsmen still work by hand. Try piti, the local lamb stew, for lunch.

Day 5 — Return to Baku & departure

Morning drive back to Baku (around 5 hours), with time for a final lunch and any last sightseeing before your departure flight.

Planning tips

This itinerary works equally well in reverse if your flight timing suits an early departure from Sheki's direction instead. Book Sheki's caravanserai hotel well in advance — it has limited rooms and fills up quickly in peak season.
