Currency and Money in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s currency is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN). Exchange rates and card acceptance can change, so use the Central Bank of Azerbaijan for the official reference rate and confirm the rate actually offered by a bank, ATM or exchange office.

Cash and cards

Cards are useful in many Baku hotels, restaurants and larger shops, while cash remains practical for small purchases, markets and some regional stops. Carry more than one payment method and keep a modest cash reserve separate from your main wallet.

Exchanging money

Use banks or clearly identified exchange providers and count the cash before leaving. Compare the displayed buy/sell rate and ask about fees. Avoid informal street exchange. Keep a receipt when available, particularly if you may need to reconvert unused manat.

ATM and payment checks

Tell your bank about the trip, confirm international withdrawal limits and understand foreign transaction fees. At terminals or ATMs, review any currency-conversion choice carefully; paying in AZN often lets your own bank handle conversion, but the correct choice depends on your card terms.
