Azerbaijan is genuinely affordable — but knowing how to spend (and where not to) makes an enormous difference. These 12 tips will save you 30–40% on a typical Azerbaijan trip.
The biggest misconception about Azerbaijan is that the 5-star Baku skyline means 5-star prices throughout. It doesn't. Once you know where to eat, sleep, and travel, Azerbaijan becomes one of the best-value destinations in the region.
Stay in guesthouses in Sheki and Quba
$15–30/night vs $70+ at hotels. Family guesthouses are often more authentic and include home-cooked breakfast.
Eat where locals eat
A full plov or kebab meal at a local restaurant costs 5–10 AZN ($3–6). Stick to family restaurants and avoid tourist-facing terrace restaurants.
Use Bolt and Uber in Baku
Never hail a taxi from the street. Bolt rides average $2–4 for most Baku journeys. Beat the meter every time.
Buy water and snacks at supermarkets
Tourist sites charge 3–4x normal prices. A 1.5L water bottle at Bravo supermarket: 0.60 AZN. The same at a tourist attraction: 2–3 AZN.
Visit Gobustan as a group
Day tours start from $38/person for groups of 6+. Solo or pairs pay $55/person. Join a small group.
Cook in hostels
Baku has several hostels with kitchens. Cooking your own breakfast saves $5–10/day.
Use the metro in Baku
0.40 AZN per journey = about $0.24. Clean, safe, frequent. Most central areas are within walking distance of a station.
Visit in shoulder season
March–April and October–November: 20–30% lower hotel prices and fewer crowds. Weather is still excellent.
Skip the upgrade
The 'upgraded' room at a Sheki hotel is usually a marginally larger version of the standard. The standard is perfectly good.
Book intercity by marshrutka
Baku to Sheki by marshrutka: $5 vs $80+ for a private transfer. Comfortable enough for a 4-hour journey.
Free attractions
The Baku Boulevard, Fountains Square, Martyrs Lane, and the Old City itself are free to wander.
Negotiate at bazaars
Bazaar prices — particularly for carpets, crafts, and pomegranates — are starting prices. 15–20% off is normal for a polite counter-offer.
