Azerbaijan's second city — birthplace of Nizami, ancient hammams, and Goygol Lake nearby
Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city and one of its most historically layered — birthplace of the 12th-century poet Nizami Ganjavi, whose works influenced Persian and world literature for centuries. The old city centre has been beautifully restored, with the 17th-century Javadkhan Mosque, a series of ancient hammams (Agha Mikayil, Agha Zeynal, and Taze Bey), and the atmospheric Bottle House built entirely from beer bottles. An hour from Ganja, Goygol National Park contains one of Azerbaijan's most photographed mountain lakes — formed by a historic earthquake in 1139 — surrounded by dense forest and alpine wildflowers. The western route through Ganja also passes Naftalan's famous therapeutic oil spa resort.
