Azerbaijan's ancient former capital — Juma Mosque, wine country, and the astrophysical observatory
Shamakhi is one of Azerbaijan's oldest and most historically significant cities — once the capital of the Shirvanshah state and a thriving Silk Road hub before a devastating 1902 earthquake reshaped it. Today it's known for the rebuilt Juma Mosque (one of the first mosques in the Caucasus), the royal tombs of Yeddi Gunbaz, a growing wine scene centred on Fireland Vineyards and Meyseri Wines, and the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory — the largest in the Caucasus. The region's mountains and surrounding villages (Lahij is nearby) make it an excellent addition to any Baku day trip or northern loop itinerary.
