Shamkir and the adjacent Goygol region form part of Azerbaijan's little-visited western corridor, yet contain some of the country's most remarkable stories. Goygol is famous primarily for Lake Goygol — a stunningly clear mountain lake formed in 1139 by a massive earthquake that diverted a river — set within a national park of dense Caucasus forest. Shamkir itself has an extraordinary history as one of the centres of Azerbaijan's Caucasus German community, established in the 19th century when German colonists were invited by the Russian Empire to settle the region. Helenendorf (now Goygol town) still has German-style architecture and one of Azerbaijan's oldest wineries.
