Azerbaijan's multicultural north-west — forests, Alazan River, and artisan villages near the Georgian border
Village life in Azerbaijan's northern districts
Nij — a historic Udi Christian village in northern Azerbaijan
The north-western corner of Azerbaijan — encompassing Zagatala, Gakh, Balaken, and Oguz — is one of the country's most culturally diverse and scenically rewarding regions, yet receives a fraction of visitors compared to the northern loop. The Ilisu waterfall — one of Azerbaijan's most photogenic natural features — is a short detour from the main Sheki–Zagatala road and worth a stop for any traveler with time. The Alazan River valley is heavily forested and agricultural, growing some of the country's finest hazelnuts, tobacco, and stone fruit. Zagatala has a fortress from the Russian Imperial period, an old bazaar quarter, and easy access to the Zagatala National Reserve. Gakh is set directly against the Caucasus Mountains with stunning views, while Oguz is one of the historically significant Mountain Jewish settlements in Azerbaijan.
