Qiz Galasi · Icherisheher (Old City), Baku · UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Maiden Tower (Qiz Galasi in Azerbaijani) is an 8-storey cylindrical tower in the heart of Baku's UNESCO-listed Old City. Built in the 12th century — though some sections may be even older — it is the most recognisable symbol of Baku and Azerbaijan itself. The tower appears on the country's 1 manat banknote and is virtually every visitor's first photograph in the city.
The purpose of the tower has long been debated by historians. Theories range from a defensive watchtower to an astronomical observatory to a Zoroastrian fire temple. The spiral staircase inside leads to a rooftop terrace with sweeping views over the Old City and the Caspian Sea. Each floor of the interior houses an exhibit about the tower's history and legends.
The name "Maiden Tower" likely refers to a legend about a princess who leapt from the tower rather than marry the shah she did not love. Each August, the tower hosts the Maiden Tower Art Festival where contemporary artists project light art onto its ancient stone face.
