Do you need a transit visa?
If you're staying inside the airport transit zone and not clearing immigration, you typically don't need any visa at all. A transit visa is only required if you plan to leave the airport.

Most travelers connecting through Heydar Aliyev International Airport without leaving the secure transit area do not need a visa of any kind, provided their layover stays within the airport's international transit zone and connecting flights are same-day or next-day. If you want to leave the airport during a longer layover — for example, to see Baku's Old City on a 24+ hour stopover — you'll need either the standard eVisa or, in some cases, a dedicated transit visa depending on your nationality and onward itinerary.

Turning a long layover into a Baku day trip

If your layover is 12+ hours, applying for the standard eVisa (rather than a separate transit visa) and spending the time exploring the Old City and Boulevard is genuinely worthwhile — Baku is one of the more rewarding stopover cities in the region. See our 2-day Baku itinerary for how we'd structure a short visit, or contact us directly for a layover-specific plan.

Transit visa FAQs
I have a 6-hour layover in Baku — do I need anything?
If you're staying within the airport's international transit area and not clearing immigration, no visa is needed. Confirm with your airline that your connection qualifies as airside transit.
Can I get a transit visa on arrival?
No — like the standard eVisa, transit visas should be arranged online in advance at evisa.gov.az, not on arrival.
Should I get a transit visa or the standard eVisa?
For most travelers with a 12+ hour layover wanting to see Baku, the standard $26 eVisa is the simpler choice since it gives a full 30-day window rather than a restrictive short transit period — useful if your return flight is delayed.
